Masashi Kishimoto

岸本 斉史

Masashi Kishimoto (岸 本 斉 史, Kishimoto Masashi) was born on November 8, 1974 in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, and is the creator and author of the popular manga and anime Naruto. He debuted as mangaká (Japanese cartoonist) with his work Karakuri, which was submitted to Shueisha in 1996. From 1999, his next work, Naruto was serialized in the weekly magazine Shonen Jump. Kishimoto received the Hop Step award, which is given to new artists once a month from Shonen Jump. He also says he was heavily influenced by the Dragon Ball series and its creator, Akira Toriyama. His twin brother Seishi Kishimoto is also a mangaka and the creator of Satan's 666 and Drive Blazer. His art has been commented as being very similar and several accusations of plagiarism were made, or that Seishi had copied his brother, or vice versa. However, Seishi notes in one of his manga volumes that the similarities are not intentional and that the occurrence would have been likely because both he and Masashi were influenced by many of the same things. Masashi Kishimoto publicly rejected these accusations in his own manga. In his interviews and exclusively in the manga of Naruto, he usually mentions his deceased plant, Ukki-kun. According to Kishimoto, the first time he had a plant in the office due to the lack of natural atmosphere, he fed on diluted plant foods. He continued to buy several other plants later, but many of them died.
